You Can Take It With You!! – part 4

PART 4! ENJOY!

In this tongue-in-cheek story…let us be amused…but not too amused…for there is a serious side to all of this. Look over the charted history of coins for the past 35 years. I am submitting a few examples of these charts with this article. Then look at the projection for the coming 300 to 400 years, based on the past price record. Consider the possibilities upon awakening with some of the BU key coins…or any coins, for that matter… clutched In our grubby little hands… and I am speaking of an awakening…a thawing out…in the year 2369…or perhaps even further along into that faraway future! Even the no-account, common coins would have a price multiple of fantastic bounds over such a great span of time! It is wild speculation all the way…true…and it requires a type of individual capable of speculating or thinking on a wild scale and it also needs a speculative person in the sense of holding an investment over the long term for a profit!

Whetner we want to accept the science of Cryonics or not…it is to become increasingly important in the years ahead. More and more people will be forming family “Wills” that will leave instructions for cryonic suspension. Religion will gradually become less of a barrier. Only earlier this year a “cryonic” funeral was held for a woman with a Catholic priest officiating. This woman died knowing that her religious needs had been taken care of and also knowing that if there is a slim chance of the cryonic dream of extended immortality coming true… her cryonic needs have also been taken care of. She had nothing to lose. The crypt contents on either side of her crypt capsule will revert to dust…but she will remain intact…facing a future that may be unbelievable in its scientific advances and utopian way of life!

We can get a rough idea of what coins could be worth hundreds of years from now if they were passed along cryonically with the owner. This is done by charting the price history for every coin series and then projecting ahead on the basis of the gains made in the past. I am giving some examples of the price histories here. Picking the Indianhead keys, the Buffalo Nickel keys and the early Lincoln Cent keys…and going back some 34 years.

We can use the reasoning that if coins have advanced so much in these thirty-four years (as shown in all charts) then roughly the multiple would be three times as much for 100 years, six times as much for 200 years and twelve times as much for 400 years.

Naturally there probably should be mathematical adjustments made for price resistance as prices reach astronomical heights…adjustments would have to be made for the future waves of inflation and devaluations that might expand all prices abnormally. Also… when we get into the future areas, hundreds of years from now, coin prices might leave the accepted price trails of the past and course forward much faster on the new jet freeways of the atomic future!

The huge numismatic populace of the future will look lack upon our issues as “ancient” pieces…so rare…as to be practical priceless…particularly in a coin-less future, which it will surely be!

The following charts should allow the reader to gauge the supply and rarity of some of the main key coins in our hobby. I have gone back as far as there are sufficient and accurate price patterns to go by. The following example charts will illustrate my point:

OVERALL TOTALS FOR THESE THREE GROUPS OF COINS ARE: 1969              1935

$9,405.00                                       $50.00

This works out to a multiple of 188 in these past thirty four years. In other words…the present 1969 price is 188 times the 1935 price.

Roughly…this would figure out to: 564 times…for 100 years of passing time 1128 times…for 200 years of passing time 2256 times…for 400 years of passing time If we use these figures, then $1000 worth of key coins today would be valued at: $2,256,000 in the year 2369!! or… $1,128,000 in the 2169!!

A $100 coin could bear a price tag in the neighborhood of $225,600… some four hundred years from now!!

Conservatively speaking…figuring at the rate of bank compounded interest… money doubles in about 14 to 15 years (at today’s interest rates) … if allowed to remain undisturbed and compounded regularly…so these hard-to-believe figures are really not so surprising after all!!
